Job Description

Applications are invited from talented and enthusiastic doctors in training who seek a career combining research, teaching and the care of patients. The Academic Clinical Fellowship forms a significant part of the NIHR Integrated Academic Training Programme. Fellows will develop skills allowing them to compete successfully for funding to study for a higher degree (MD/PhD). Only applicants who can demonstrate that they have outstanding potential for development as a clinical academic will be considered for this programme.

Academic Clinical Fellowships are held for three years, after which time candidates should have obtained funding for their higher degrees and start work towards these. On completion of the ACF the trainee will either continue their research if external funding has been obtained or enter their designated training programme as a full time clinical trainee, provided that appropriate clinical competences have been obtained.

Applicants are expected to fulfil the academic person specification and appropriate clinical person specification.

Candidates will be selected on academic merit, notwithstanding the necessity for successful candidates to demonstrate appropriate clinical potential

Candidates accepted onto the academic programme may be expected to work in any of the Hospitals on the rotation. Flexibility, understanding and co-operation is expected from the post holder. The Postgraduate Dean confirms that these placements and/or programmes will have the required educational and Dean's approval at the time of entry into the programme.

Health Education England - East Midlands is committed to developing postgraduate training programmes for both general and higher professional training as laid down by Colleges and Faculties, and by the Postgraduate Dean’s network. At local level, college/specialty tutors work with unit postgraduate clinical tutors in supervising these programmes.

Applicants that do not already hold a National Training Number (NTN) or Deanery Reference Number (DRN) in the GMC specialty to which they are applying for will also be required to undertake the national clinical recruitment process and attend an assessment/interview for that GMC specialty as appropriate. If applicants require clinical benchmarking then they will be required to fill out a separate standard clinical application form. For further details please refer to the NIHR website.

This is for completion of CCT/CESR (CP) subject to satisfactory progression.

The Training Programme is equally open to those who may, either from the outset or subsequently, wish to train flexibly. Approval must be sought from HEE-EM prior to interview and this is subject to availability of suitable training placements.

You are eligible to be considered for training in Round 1 if:

  • You are a UK or EEA national
  • You are a non-UK or non-EEA national and your immigration status allows you to work without restriction in the UK. For example, if you have Tier 1 or dependent status, and no restriction against working as a doctor or dentist in training
  • You are a non-UK or non-EEA national, you graduated from a UK medical or dental school, your immigration status currently entitles you to work in the Foundation Programme and where you would have previously been eligible for Tier 1 (PSW). You will need to apply for Tier 2 sponsorship, but you will be exempt from the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) in this instance.

Evidence of immigration status should normally consist of a biometric residence card, date stamped passport, and accompanying letter from the Home Office. Please visit their website for more information.
