The Ophthalmology Department at Glangwili deals with a wide range of ophthalmic diseases, including high volume cataract surgery. An innovative Rapid access clinic (RACE) has been set up at Glangwili General Hospital to run throughout the day. This is manned predominantly by Speciality doctors in order to cope with the demand for unscheduled and emergency care. Some emergencies are accommodated, where possible, in the other DGH ophthalmology clinics as and when necessary. Glangwili General Hospital acts as the hub for the ophthalmology service and constant consultant presence here provides continuous support for the RACE clinic. This service has enabled a much more efficient use of clinics which previously struggled to cope with acute cases in addition to the appointment based workload.
