Consultant Dermatologist

Job Description

It’s an exciting time for Dermatology services at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Due to the sustained growth and expansion of services we are recruiting to a new, permanent consultant post. The post is also suitable for a Locum Dermatologist with a view to progressing to a substantive appointment if mutually agreeable.

This 10 PA post in Dermatology will be based at Royal South Hants Hospital, with some sessions based in Southampton General Hospital and/or peripheral hospitals. The focus of this post is to provide comprehensive specialist outpatient services in dermatology and in addition could include either services for skin cancer including appropriate surgical treatment/MOHS or services for a subspecialty in medical dermatology. It is anticipated that the post-holder will either have a special interest in cutaneous surgery/ oncology and skin cancer or he/she will be a generalist/medical dermatologist with existing or keen interest to develop sub-speciality expertise in medical dermatology i.e. paediatric dermatology that would complement the department and/or support existing services.

Involvement with undergraduate education will be required as the unit is part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).The dermatology teaching module is one of the most successful programs within the university. In addition, the department provides postgraduate training of specialist registrars, SHO’s, GPSI’s and others.

The Southampton dermatology department is a busy self-contained outpatient department in a large university teaching hospital. The post holder will join an existing team of 11 consultants including academic clinician scientists. We have very well established links with the academic department at University of Southampton and excellent facilities for research are in place. Southampton is one of three recognised specialist centres for treating skin cancer within the Central South Coast Cancer Network and within that it is the recognised melanoma centre with access to major melanoma trials. Skin cancer forms a large amount of our workload; We are in the process of setting up MOHS micrographic surgery at UHS and the department has recently established a new specialist photo-investigation service in close cooperation with St. John’s institute. In addition, the department has a strong research interest in allergy /drug allergy, eczema, psoriasis and photo-dermatology and it is striving to develop tertiary services in these fields.

It is of great importance of UHS to support the existing specialist services and build new ones so that secondary care dermatology can remain robust in the changing economic NHS climate.
The applicants are strongly encouraged to engage with the vision of the Trust and therefore we are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative candidate who will further support our well established team and facilitate the development of new specialist services.

All applications must be made online. CV or paper applications are not accepted.
