Our vacancy

This is a post for a Consultant in Care of the Elderly based at Walton Community Hospital providing comprehensive geriatric assessment in the Diagnostic and treatment centre, in-patient work managing assessment and rehabilitation of a ward along with community liaison working with local GPs and where necessary undertaking occasional domiciliary consultations.

  • This appointment is for a full time (10 Programmed Activities) contract at Consultant level
  • The appointment is suitable for an experienced medical practitioner with an interest in Elderly Care.
  • The post holder will be employed by Virgin Care as the main employer and is expected to work seamlessly with the local acute services, OPAL team and linking into North West surrey CCG frail elderly hub developments.

There is no commitment to on call currently.


Walton and Woking Community Hospitals support Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals for rehabilitation and step down care. The duties of the post in the community are to provide consultant leadership and management of patients admitted to the inpatient service in the Community Hospital and provide an outpatient service providing comprehensive geriatric assessment.

  • Day to day ward cover is provided by 4 Specialty Doctors within the community hospitals across 3 wards. ( 60 community beds)
  • The outpatient service is delivered in the Diagnostic and Treatment Centre at Walton and Woking providing comprehensive geriatric assessment.
  • Out of hours cover is provided by Care UK.

The Elderly Care Medical team consist of :3 Consultants in Elderly Medicine ( 1 of which is the Clinical Lead) and 4 Speciality Doctors

There are 3 elderly rehabilitation wards within the 2 hospitals as well as a walk in centre, digital x-ray, outpatient departments, social care, therapy and podiatry departments.

The Consultant led Diagnostic and Treatment Centre is on each site providing comprehensive geriatric assessment. The community nursing teams, rehabilitation teams, rapid response teams and mental health teams are co-located.

There is a need and an opportunity for on going development of services for the complex frail elderly within North West Surrey, in line with commissioning intentions. The post holder will play a key role in the strategic development of services for older people particularly those who are frail with multiple co-morbidities and complex needs.
