For nearly 35 years Earl Mountbatten Hospice has provided care of the highest quality to patients and their families, and has educated, taught and undertaken research to directly improve the care that it provides. Today the hospice cares for over 1200 terminally ill people and their families each year either in its 16 bed in-patient unit or through its community service. We also have a Palliative Care Team based at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport. The innovative John Cheverton Day, Rehabilitation and Wellbeing centre offers a range of clinics, treatments, therapies and social and psychological support for all those living on the Island with a life-limiting illness.
This is an exciting opportunity to share in the leadership of the Isle of Wight’s only hospice, which is known for its forward thinking developments in palliative and end of life care. As part of redeveloping the Senior Team, Earl Mountbatten Hospice requires a new Consultant in Specialist Palliative Medicine with Medical Director Responsibilities. You will work as part of an established medical team which comprises 2 consultants, 2 specialty doctors, a general practice registrar. There are also sessions from 3 GPs with specialty interests and excellent links with consultant colleagues and general practitioners across the island. Discussions and plans are underway for a third geriatrician/palliative care consultant to join the team within the next year.
With only one CCG, one council and one provider Trust hosting the hospital, community, ambulance, mental health services, and an on-island integrated health and social care 111 hub, the island has attracted additional funding and national interest. The Isle of Wight is also currently a Department of Health ‘Vanguard’ site, and as a lead partner, the hospice is involved in spearheading and developing new models of integrated care across the health and social care system.
We are keen to attract the right person to this post, so whether you are an experienced Palliative Care Consultant or this will be your first consultant role, we are keen to hear from you. Specifically we are seeking somebody who:
• is an excellent palliative physician
• is an effective communicator and innovator who likes ‘thinking outside of the box’
• is skilled in management and organisational leadership
• has a strong interest in local and national strategy
• is interested in self-development and new experiences
• is excited at being part of a developing, forward thinking and innovative organisation
For an initial conversation please contact Nigel Hartley, Chief Executive Officer, Earl Mountbatten Hospice, by email ( Email address removed ) or by Telephone: ( Phone number removed ) , Mobile: ( Phone number removed )
The Isle of Wight is a beautiful place to live with excellent opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Most of the Island is semi-rural with miles of unspoilt bridleways coursing through National Trust woods and over chalk downs. Spectacular cliff and coastal walks can be enjoyed all around the Island.
House prices compare favourably to the mainland and southern England with a wide choice of desirable property to suit all tastes. In addition, there are excellent public and private schools, and shopping and leisure facilities on the Island have improved enormously in recent years.
There are multiple frequent ferry links to the mainland and London can be reached in 90 minutes by rail from Southampton or Portsmouth. There is a regional airport at Southampton, just 30 minutes away, with flights to many European destinations as well as UK mainland cities.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
