This is a replacement post for a consultant to join a dynamic, friendly, cohesive team of eight consultants at the James Paget University Hospital in the center of the Norfolk Broads, with one day a week spent at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital in the neighbouring historic cathedral city of Norwich.
The unit is located less than a mile from long sandy beaches, and is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Norfolk Broads. The city of Norwich is only 30 minutes away, and is regularly voted one of the top 5 shopping destinations in the UK. There is a wide choice of good local schools and very attractive house prices.
The successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to develop a sub-regional paediatric ophthalmology network, across two well-respected teaching hospitals to provide services for the population of Norfolk and north Suffolk.
The James Paget University Hospital has an exceptionally well equipped, modern eye unit. The department offers subspecialty expertise in Glaucoma, Diabetic Eye Disease, Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, Medical Retina (including AMD service), Oculoplastic, Cornea & External Eye Disease, Ocular Motility & Paediatric Ophthalmology, and cataract surgery. There is an active research department within the unit, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia; and there is scope for the successful applicant to develop a research interest.
The unit has a strong regional reputation for postgraduate training, with the only regional cataract surgical simulator, and regular 6-monthly regional surgical skills courses run in the modern purpose-built on-site education & training centre, with full ophthalmic wet lab facilities.

The JPUH have been given an overall rating of “Good,” following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection which took place in August 2015. This places us in the top 30% of acute trusts in the country.
