Job Description

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 16 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology services across the wider region.

We employ more tha 6,500 staff, with a turnover in excess of £370m in 2014/2015 and have approximately 900 beds.

  • Cardiovascular care at our Cardiac centre.
  • Accident and Emergeancy at Blackpool Teaching Hospital
  • Community Midwifery and Women and Childrens Services.
  • Clinical research with an 80-strong team of nurses and doctors
  • Community nursing ans school nursing
  • Recovery and rehabilitation for a variety of conditions including brain injury, stroke and elderly care.
  • Sexual health and family planning services
  • Wellbeing and lifestyle including mental health services, heart health campaigns, and smoking cessation services.
  • End of life and palliative care.

Between April 1 2014 and March 31 2015 we treated 100,662 day cases and inpatients (elective and non-elective), 329,257 outpatients and had 83,303 A & E attendances. The total number of community contacts was 1,228,494.

The Trust houses a state of the art Simulation & Skills Facility that provides training for all grades of staff to improve the safety and quality of the service that we offer our patients.

We run a portfolio of in-house courses that can be accessed by all staff to enhance their professional development needs. The training is supported by the use of modern equipment including part task trainers for such skills as venepuncture and full body manikins for the practice of emergency drills.


It is an exciting time to join the Respiratory Department at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, which is looking to appoint an 7th respiratory physician

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and operates within a regional health economy catchment area that spans Lancashire and South Cumbria, supporting a population of 16 million.The Trust provides a range of acute and community services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiothoracic and Haematology services across the wider region.The Trust comprises Blackpool Victoria Hospital which is a large busy acute hospital, a smaller rehabilitation hospital - Clifton Hospital - the National Artificial Eye Service and Blenheim House Child Development Centre.
We employ more than 6,500 staff and our budget is approximately £354m per year. We have around 912 beds across all sites and see more than 43,000 day-case and inpatients, 305,185 outpatients and over 82,900 A & E patients every year. The Trust has recently received approval from Specialist Commissioners to deliver Adult Cystic Fibrosis services to patients in Lancashire. A plan to implement this is currently in progress.

We wish to further expand the Respiratory Department to provide a new service to support the development of a dedicated acute Respiratory Assessment Centre and Respiratory High Care facility, and an Ambulatory Care service including Hot Clinics and a dedicated Pleural Diseases service. There is scope for the successful candidate to develop their own area of sub-specialisation. Current interests within the department include Lung Cancer, Sleep, NIV, Pulmonary Hypertension, Pleural Disease, TB and Interstitial Lung Disease. There is also a nationally recognised, active Research Department.
The department is well-supported by 3 Lung Cancer Nurse Specialists, 6 Respiratory Nurses, 2 TB Nurse Specialists and a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist.

The respiratory physicians currently work in pairs with each consultant in a pair working 2 weeks on the respiratory wards, followed by 2 weeks off the wards. The 7th consultant will replace one of the existing 6 physicians who is leading the development of Cystic Fibrosis services

There is also a general medical on-call commitment with a 1 in 24 weekdays and 1 in 8 weekends on-call. An on call intensity supplement is payable.
