Consultant in Care of the Elderly and Frailty

The Care of the Elderly Department at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Physician in Care of the Elderly. The post is to aid further development of Acute Frailty and Reanablement Services and is a 10 PA post.

The Department has an established reputation and benchmarks well in National audit programmes. There is a dedicated Stroke Unit with inpatient thrombolysis. There are two dedicated Stroke Specialist nurses. There is a dedicated landing to provide acute inpatient beds for Elderly Medicine. We are developing an acute Frailty unit and have five Specialist frailty Nurses who inreach into AMU and ED to provide Comprehensive Geriatric assessment. It is expected that this post holder will aid further develop of the Acute Frailty Service. The Department has physicians with special interest in falls, frailty and syncope, continence, Ortho-geriatrics and research (with links to the University of Sheffield). We have Specialist nurses in Continence promotion and Falls to promote this.

You will receive mentoring and support for this role and it is envisaged there will be regular feedback meetings. The successful applicant will participate in the unselected medical take with a frequency of approximately 1 in 15. Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching will be expected, the College Tutor is a member of the CSU and the Trust has a good record in getting candidates through PACES.

Funding is available for up to full-time working, although candidates who are available part-time are also encouraged to apply. Any consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a circa 500 bedded district general hospital, built in the 1970s and serving a a population of approximately a quarter of a million people in the Barnsley area. In 2005 the hospital gained Foundation Trust status.

Today, the hospital continues to provide a full range of district hospital services to the local community and surrounding area. These include Emergency Department services, outpatient clinics, inpatient services, and Maternity and Children’s services. We also provide a number of specialised services, including cancer and surgical services, in conjunction with other hospitals.

Our principal commissioner is Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which is responsible for commissioning health services for the population of Barnsley. We have made significant investment in our estate. In the past few years, we have successfully completed an £8m development of the Imaging Department, a £1 million refurbishment of the Acute Medical Unit and £2 million on the Emergency Department Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) and Resuscitation Unit.

Operationally, we have three Clinical Business Units (CBUs). Each CBU is led by a team made up of a Clinical Director, a Head of Nursing and a General Manager, who are supported by a Matron and Service Manager together with HR, Finance and Data Analyst Teams.
