Job Description

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 16 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology services across the wider region.

We employ more tha 6,500 staff, with a turnover in excess of £370m in 2014/2015 and have approximately 900 beds.

Our main activities are

  • Cardiovascular care at our Cardiac centre.
  • Accident and Emergeancy at Blackpool Teaching Hospital

  • Clinical research with an 80-strong team of nurses and doctors
  • Community nursing and school nursing
  • Recovery and rehabilitation for a variety of conditions including brain injury, stroke and elderly care.

  • Wellbeing and lifestyle including mental health services, heart health campaigns, and smoking cessation services.
  • End of life and palliative care.

Between April 1 2014 and March 31 2015 we treated 100,662 day cases and inpatients (elective and non-elective), 329,257 outpatients and had 83,303 A & E attendances. The total number of community contacts was 1,228,494.

The Trust houses a state of the art Simulation & Skills Facility that provides training for all grades of staff to improve the safety and quality of the service that we offer our patients.

We run a portfolio of in-house courses that can be accessed by all staff to enhance their professional development needs. The training is supported by the use of modern equipment including part task trainers for such skills as venepuncture and full body manikins for the practice of emergency drills.


CONSULTANT RADIOLOGIST with special interest in Breast Imaging

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to advertise for a Consultant Radiologist with specialist interest in breast imaging.

This is an opportunity to specialize in breast work, offering other Radiology work in addition and to be part of the on call team.

The breast work would involve supporting an established team of radiologists providing a rapid assessment symptomatic breast service and the interventional and pre-operative examinations. The work of this area has increased significantly in the last two years and this additional post is needed to ensure sustained service delivery.

As one of our highly valued Consultant Radiologists you will have access to the latest technology; we currently have two Siemens Avanto MRI Scanners (October 2009 and January 2010), three Siemens CT scanners (one a 2x64-slice DSCT) and a third cardiac enabled 128 slice, CT 2013, two Gamma Cameras (both SPECT/CT, one a GE Discovery 670 16 slice, 2014) a new Angiography and Interventional Suite ( 2 Phillips systems 2014 (Allura Clarity FD20 and MulitDiagnost Eleva) and a refreshed fully integrated Agfa PACS/RIS with Voice Recognition installed February 2014.
A Radiologist of the Day service covers emergencies until 8pm weekday and 3pm weekends with 2nd on call after this time. Tele-radiology covers emergency CT out of those hours.

The Trust has been identified as one of the top organisations to work for in the UK Public Sector. The Trust is actively pursuing a total quality approach through self-assessment, which led to our being the first NHS radiology department to receive ISAS accreditation in 2010; this has very recently been renewed. Management structures are designed to ensure that operational and management decision-making rests with the Directorate Teams.

The Fylde Coast offers a good combination of quiet villages and lively towns and cities. It is within easy reach of Manchester and Liverpool and has excellent access to the Lake District.

The post is full-time, with scope for additional sessions in excess of the 10PA contract, though part-time or job share will be considered. The post will be based at the Victoria Hospital, Blackpool.

The successful candidates will be employed under Terms and Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. Applicants must have a CCT or equivalent, with entry on the GMC specialist register (or eligible within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointments committee).
