The opportunity has arisen for a dynamic consultant physician to join the established team already in place providing Respiratory services at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. This post will enhance the excellent services already provided for our patients. We are inviting applicants with a specialist interest in Cystic Fibrosis to apply, with the opportunity to develop an interest in other own clinical area to compliment the established experienced respiratory team. There will also be support for the successful applicant to develop a research programme in their area of interest.

It is anticipated that the post holder will work a job plan, with 5 PA’s of Cystic Fibrosis work and 5 PA’s of general respiratory work with the opportunity to utilise and develop skills in bronchoscopy and EBUS. Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) provides services for the east and north of Birmingham, South Staffordshire, Solihull, and parts of Warwickshire. The population served is approximately 750,000. The area which Birmingham Heartlands Hospital serves is essentially urban with some relatively deprived inner city areas, but the catchment area extends into dormitory suburbs and further afield into rural populations. The Trust has three hospital sites – Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Solihull Hospital (SH) and Good Hope Hospital (GHH). This post is based exclusively at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH). BHH is the largest of the three sites and is located approximately 3 miles from the city centre and 7 miles from the University of Birmingham Medical School. BHH has over 800 beds and provides a full range of acute hospital services. Regional specialties at BHH include Nephrology, Thoracic Surgery, Clinical Haematology and Infectious Diseases. The regional cytogenetics, virology and immunology departments are also on site together with the Birmingham Public Health Laboratory and an evolving Toxicology service. Other specialised units include a large department of Respiratory Medicine with a supra-regional cystic fibrosis unit.

The Respiratory Directorate comprises a purpose built unit which is based on wards 24, 25 and 26 which is designed for investigating and caring for patients with acute and chronic respiratory diseases.

The general Respiratory ward on the Heartlands site (ward 24) consists of 43 beds, which are a mixture of single rooms and small bays. The Directorate also has 4 beds, fully equipped, for overnight sleep studies (ward 25). There is also a purpose-built eleven bedded area (Acute Lung Unit) within ward 24, equipped for patients requiring assisted ventilation for respiratory failure. Within the Department of Infectious diseases there is also access to isolation and cubicle facilities for patients with tuberculosis. Ward 26 hosts the West Midlands Adult Cystic Fibrosis unit (20-bedded: all single rooms) with a dedicated outpatients area.

It is envisaged the successful applicant will contribute to respiratory ward cover, bronchoscopy, and specialist respiratory outpatient clinics and also on call respiratory rota.
