Job Description

Public Health England (PHE) is an executive agency of the Department of Health providing; strategic leadership, research, advice and support for Government, local authorities and the NHS in protecting and improving the nation’s health.

This will be dependent on the successful candidate’s current salary and terms and/or equivalent experience. The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change, most local authority pay grades and other systems which have annual pay increments. Salary increases are awarded based on performance assessed through the annual appraisal cycle.

Appointment to this post is on PHE terms and conditions of service. Only previous continuous service in the Civil Service is recognised for contractual purposes. If appointed to this post on the terms related to the Clinical Ring Fence, previous continuous service in the NHS and Civil Service is recognised for contractual purposes.

Job Purpose / Summary

The South East Public Health England Centre integrates different public health disciplines, providing effective services and support for health protection, health improvement and health care public health. The Centre is a single point of access to the full range of PHE’s specialist skills and knowledge.

The postholder will be part of the multi-disciplinary team providing the day-to-day health protection function, including the management of infectious and environmental hazards and supporting response to major incidents.

The post is an entry level Health Protection development post and as such will develop specialist knowledge and skills to undertake case management, liaise with, and provide health protection advice and response across a range of partner organisations, professionals and the public.

The postholder will undergo a programme of on-going development and education to build on existing knowledge and develop skills to provide specialist health protection advice and meet competencies required to undertake the role. After a period of training, the postholder will be required to participate in the on call health protection rota.

It is an essential criteria the applicant is either NMC registered or has professional registration with CIEH, HCPC or UKPHR (or is working towards UKPHR registration and currently in a Public Health Practitioner Development Scheme)
