The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a busy department with its own purpose built facilities within the main hospital complex. There are 36 obstetric beds and 20 gynaecological beds. The unit has approximately 3000 deliveries each year. Neonatal intensive care is available on site with back-up support from a regional unit in Sheffield. We are an attractive unit with Good Ratings from recent CQC visit offering Specialist services This includes minimal invasive / Surgery/ Office gynaecology / colposcopy / Hysteroscopy / Urogynae / Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology assessment unit with newly refurbished Birthing Centre having 4 pools for waterbirth, dedicated elective LSCS lists with Enhanced recovery, Perinatal services with doppler and Invasive testing. Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a circa 500 bedded district general hospital, built in the 1970s and serving a a population of approximately a quarter of a million people in the Barnsley area. In 2005 the hospital gained Foundation Trust status.
Today, the hospital continues to provide a full range of district hospital services to the local community and surrounding area. These include Emergency Department services, outpatient clinics, inpatient services, and Maternity and Children’s services. We also provide a number of specialised services, including cancer and surgical services, in conjunction with other hospitals.
Our principal commissioner is Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which is responsible for commissioning health services for the population of Barnsley. We have made significant investment in our estate. In the past few years, we have successfully completed an £8m development of the Imaging Department, a £1 million refurbishment of the Acute Medical Unit and £2 million on the Emergency Department Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) and Resuscitation Unit.
Operationally, we have three Clinical Business Units (CBUs). Each CBU is led by a team made up of a Clinical Director, a Head of Nursing and a General Manager, who are supported by a Matron and Service Manager together with HR, Finance and Data Analyst Teams.
