Job Description

We are a pioneering research active organisation and we are proud to be doing things differently; whether that be redefining the shape of the local health and care system through our innovative plans for integrated care, or developing new services such as our Frail Older Person’s Assessment Service and our Medically Fit for Discharge Ward.

As well as creating the future, we also know the importance of providing really good, safe, and caring services for our patients. Our iCARE ethos sets out the principles which every member of our staff works to, ensuring good communication, attitude, respect and care for the hospital environment. Our patients tell us we’re getting this right, with our Friends and Family Test results consistently above 95 per cent (patients ‘extremely likely’ or ‘likely’ to recommend us to their friends and family).

Applications are invited for a one year fixed term Consultant Medical Oncologist at Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join a friendly, enthusiastic and innovative team, working with one other full time Medical Oncologist along with visiting Consultant Oncologists from neighbouring Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

The directorate is seeking a full time (10 PA) candidate to provide oncology services to Yeovil with sub-specialisation in breast and urology. The department welcomes discussions from applicants wishing to discuss flexible working or part time commitments Experience in ovarian cancer would be a preference but is not essential to this role.

This will include outpatient clinics, attending relevant MDTs and also providing support to the well-established Acute Oncology Service. Yeovil District General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust participates in a wide number of research and clinical trials, and the successful candidate will have plenty opportunities to further their research interest. There will be no on call commitment, as out of hours advice is provided by on call consultant colleagues in Taunton.

The Douglas Macmillan Oncology and Haematology Unit is committed to providing high quality, personalised care to our patients. In 2014, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Trust was ranked 9th in the UK in the National Patient Experience Survey for Cancer Services. In the same year, we achieved CHKS accreditation for our Chemotherapy Services. There are many opportunities for the successful candidate to develop services further, based on personal interest and skills.

Yeovil District Hospital has enjoyed a stable and successful history; trusted and respected by our patients, staff and commissioners, and well-rated by the ‘Care Quality Commission’ and ‘Monitor’. We have been repeatedly rated as one of the top-10 healthcare employers in the country, a leading light in global stroke research and development, and attracted national interest in our iCARE model, which has established the principles of exemplary patient care experience within our hospital.

Yeovil District Hospital has recently been awarded ‘Vanguard’ status following a successful joint bid with NHS England. Being a ‘Vanguard’ site identifies us as one of the most innovative trusts in the country and gives us unique access to national support and funding to realise our exciting plans.

Yeovil District Hospital is a modern hospital in pleasant countryside only two hours from London and less than one hour from the nearest coast. There are excellent facilities in a purpose built Education Centre and we can provide off-site accommodation for our staff members.

Applicants must have MBBS and MRCP qualifications or equivalent and be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practise. Ideally applicants should have entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date), CESR or European Community Rights, although this is not essential for a locum position.

We welcome applications from both Medical and Clinical Oncologists, please note we do not offer radiotherapy. Whether you are an established consultant looking for an improved quality of life or a ST6 training registrar considering where you might want to work after your CCT, and if you think that life in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK might suit you, we’d like to hear from you for a no-obligation conversation.
