Job Description

At Turning Point, we support people with learning disabilities across the UK. As a Support Worker, you’ll make a real difference as you provide support and advice to help each of the people who use our services to achieve their potential. Passionate about people, you’ll enjoy the scope and support to enhance your own experience too, as you make the role your own as part of a friendly team.

This is a hands–on job in which you’ll support individuals with personal care, helping with medication as well as a full range of daily activities, including cleaning and cooking, working alongside an individual on your own or with colleagues. You’ll arrange activities in the home and in the local community, set up appointments, and support people to make small and big decisions in their day–to–day lives. Our Support Workers are committed to ensuring that people with learning disabilities lead varied and rewarding lives, and are actively engaged in making sure that can happen. As we make the transition towards more independent supported living, that could mean getting involved with anything from accompanying people to the shops to organising a day out, or going away on holiday.

While some knowledge of supporting people with learning disabilities and complex needs would be beneficial, it isn’t essential. What is essential is that you are flexible and patient and are able to view situations from a service user’s perspective. Situations can sometimes be difficult and challenging, so you’ll need to be non–judgmental, with a sensitive approach and a good understanding of how to support people during these times. At a practical level, you’ll need good IT and communication skills including numeracy and literacy in order to produce reports and support plans. You must also be fit enough to take on the more physical aspects of the role, like manual handling. A full driver’s license is desirable.

What benefits will I receive?

Of course, we know it’s not about the money. But that doesn’t mean we don’t reward our people for their invaluable work with a benefits package that includes:

Excellent training and development

A pension plan & annual leave with an option to buy and sell

A car (for some roles) and travel expenses

Family/flexible leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loan, & Bike 2 Work scheme

Free financial, legal and practical life advice, online health assessment tools, counselling services, and support from an occupational health and well–being provider

Running services on a not–for–profit basis, we invest every penny back into our services– and our people. So if you are enthusiastic, motivated and committed to supporting people with learning disabilities to live fulfilling lives Turning Point offers you a great career opportunity.

We reserve the right to close this advert early if we are able to appoint to the vacancy before the advertised closed date
