PR15112-Consultant Lead Psychologist
Due to the retirement of the current post holder an opportunity has arisen to apply for the exciting and challenging post of Consultant Lead Psychologist in the Department of Clinical and Counselling Psychology based at Royal Cornhill Hospital, Aberdeen. The Department is staffed by 148wte Clinical and Counselling Psychologists and is responsible for the provision of specialist Psychology services for adults aged 18 to 65 from Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire who present with severe and complex mental health problems.
The vacant post of Consultant Lead Psychologist provides line management and professional support to Psychology staff who primarily deliver services in Aberdeenshire (currently 72wte) working closely with colleagues in seven multi-disciplinary teams which each serve a defined group of GP practices. Reporting to the Head of Department, the role also involves acting as a member of the Department senior management team with responsibility for ensuring the delivery of high quality, effective Psychology services through appropriate clinical and professional governance. In addition to carrying a significant clinical caseload of patients with severe and complex mental health difficulties, the post holder will be responsible for the operational delivery of the Psychology service to Aberdeenshire, including making decisions about deployment of staffing resources, ensuring appropriate supervision arrangements, liaising with service managers and other clinical managers regarding service issues and undertaking annual appraisals and job planning with staff. The post holder will also be expected to deputise for the Head of Department on occasions in representing the Department on a range of management and professional committees both within NHS Grampian and at a national level. Occasionally, when the Head of Department and Clinical Lead Psychologist for Aberdeen city are both unavailable, the post holder will be expected to assume full, delegated responsibility for providing professional leadership and line management for all of the Psychology staff.
To fill this important post, we are looking for a suitably qualified Psychologist with extensive experience of working in secondary care adult mental health services who is innovative and has a passion for continuing service improvement. It is expected that the successful candidate will have completed training in at least two evidence based modalities of Psychological Therapy to an accreditable standard and be capable of offering clinical supervision and training in those modalities for other staff. Formal training in and considerable experience of providing clinical supervision to trainee and qualified Psychologists, as well as professionals from other disciplines is also a key requirement. In addition, evidence of a substantial contribution to the development of the profession and to the improvement of services through experience of professional leadership roles, clinical audit projects or published clinically relevant research, will be considered an advantage.
Staff within our service have a range of clinical interests reflecting a variety of theoretical and therapeutic orientations, and an emphasis is placed on good peer supervision and support. The Department is based in modern accommodation in Royal Cornhill Hospital and enjoys the benefits of close links with other mental health professionals based there. Clinical services are also delivered in primary care settings outwith the city of Aberdeen. A Primary Care Adult Mental Health Psychology Service is currently under development with significant input from this department in terms of professional leadership and clinical supervision of Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology (CAAPs).
There are opportunities to become involved in teaching and research, via well established links with Aberdeen University Departments of Mental Health, Psychology and General Practice and Primary Care. We also offer supervision to Clinical Psychology Trainees on the University of Edinburgh/NHS Scotland Clinical Psychology (D. Clin. Psychol) Training Programme, Trainee Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology on the MSc training ptogramme in Stirling and those undertaking further training in CBT .
