Ruth Todd

I Qualified in April 2009 and came straight to work at East Riding Care Home. I had previously worked as a care Assistant in another care home and loved it so I knew dementia and elderly care was where I wanted to specialise when I Qualified as a Nurse.

As soon as I started working for Four Seasons I was happy. I get so much job satisfaction- we strive to make our resident's later years of life rewarding and enriching by offering support, comfort and independence. I enjoy working for Four Seasons because the emphasis is on person centred care and a holistic approach to nursing. We work WITH the residents and their families to offer quality care and I'm proud to be part of a company that embraces independence and individuality.

Working at Four Seasons has given me a great opportunity to develop my career and skills; I am now Deputy Manager within my home. I've had fantastic training opportunities and my confidence has grown enormously. I have been able to put the theory I have learnt into practice. So far the training I have includes dementia awareness, challenging behaviour, venepuncture, tissue viability, safeguarding vulnerable adults and most recently I have been successful in gaining a place on FSHC developing potential Programme which is a course designed to look at self-analysis, management skills and promotion and development opportunities within the company.

When I qualified I had no intention to do anything but nursing, but now I have started to think about my future. I have seen how much of a difference I can make working 'on the floor' but I want to make a difference by ensuring as a manager everyone gets the best quality care. I have great support from my home manager and regional manager to help me achieve my ambitions.

The best thing about Four Seasons is that I've had the opportunity to broaden my skills and experience, I have more responsibility and exposure than I would have had working in the NHS. I would recommend Four Seasons as an employer to any other Qualified Nurses from newly Qualified to experienced Nurses who can share their knowledge.

To prescribe, deliver and supervise the execution of excellent standards of care in accordance with our policies and procedures; To lead a care team promoting rehabilitation and independence, together with dignity and respect, such that the lives of our residents is as they would wish it, and choose it, to be.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the highest possible standards of care, assessing residents' needs and wishes, and developing services to enhance their quality of life.
  • Champion appropriate independence and personal choice; developing, reviewing and updating care plans to meet our residents physical, social and psychological needs.
  • Oversee all aspects of medicine management on your shift - ensuring medicines are appropriately received, stored and administered, in accordance with company policies and current legislation.
  • Build the positive reputation of the Business; liaise professionally with visitors and other external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all elements of resident experience are positive, from admission to discharge.
  • Participate knowledgably and professionally to all inspection visits, ensuring your team is ready at all times to do the same.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory and best practice guidelines - identify, investigate and resolve risks proactively.
  • Ensure you follow a rigorous monitoring and recording practice; documenting efficiently, and thoroughly all matters relating to residents and employees.
  • Promote a cohesive team approach and a welcoming atmosphere to ensure staff members feel a connection to our residents and the home, and they are well supported to deliver high quality care.
  • Understand the key targets of your host home and support the Home Manager in their achievement by promoting and practicing high standards of nursing care and ensuring staff and shifts are supervised in a smooth manner.
  • Support, guide, teach and mentor others in line with the NMC Code, following its guidance at all times.
  • Attend relevant meetings both internal and external; attend regular team meetings and monthly appraisals with line manager.
  • Act as a reflective and developmental practitioner participating to continual professional development and meeting the requirements of professional revalidation.

Key Experience and Knowledge - (Desirable)

  • Experience of delivering nursing care within elderly health care sector
  • People Management experience
  • Experience of participating in quality and clinical governance programmes
