Job Description

QEHB provides direct clinical services to nearly 900,000 patients every year, serving a regional, national and international population. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. The Trust has the largest kidney programme in the UK and is a major specialist centre for burns and plastic surgery.

We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver, oncology and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK.

We are world-renowned for our trauma care and have developed pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries, including bespoke surgical solutions for previously unseen injuries. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC).

Have you ever wondered what a career in clinical research might be like? Working in a Clinical Research Facility can give you the opportunity to practice all your nursing clinical skills in a new and exciting context. The role of the Research Nurse combines traditional patient care and nursing duties with the less familiar world of research protocols and cutting edge technologies.

The NIHR/ Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility is a collaboration between the NIHR, University Hospitals Birmingham and the University of Birmingham. This purpose built research environment undertakes research projects from a variety of clinical specialities.

The post holder will be a lead nurse responsible for the planning and implementation of clinical research trials. This role involves liaison with Principal Investigators and other members of the multidisciplinary team to develop and manage trial protocols to ensure a high quality of data collection, ensuring participant safety and welfare. The post holder will be responsible for the effective running of the Clinical Research Facility in the absence of their line manager.

To be successful in this role you will need to be a level 1 Registered Nurse, with considerable experience at Band 5 in an acute care setting. Applicants need to demonstrate a willingness to train for extended roles which include venepuncture, cannulation, Central Venous Access Devices and administration of cytotoxic medications. Previous research experience desirable.
