Job Description

Our client, a highly regarded boy's Grammar School seeks to appoint a new School Nurse/Matron to commence employment as soon as possible.

The role of the School Nurse/Matron is of central importance as the person appointed will be vital to the wellbeing of pupils and staff. The School Nurse/Matron is part of a team both in the main school and also very importantly in the Boarding House. Good communication skills are vital as liaison with parents, staff and external agencies are all part of the daily routine. The applicant should be a registered nurse with experience of working with children and young people. An ability to use IT systems will be necessary. There may well be an opportunity to assist in the delivery of health related material within the PSHCE programme.

* Term time
* 38.45 hours per week - half hour to be taken for lunch (unpaid)
* 8.00am - 4.15pm


• To deal with boys who are injured or become ill during the school day.

• To keep records of any actions involving these injuries or illnesses.

• To contact parents / carers of boys needing to go home or to hospital. If necessary, to take a boy to hospital.

• To support boys with medical needs such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, mental health problems or any known long-term special health circumstances. To keep up to date records for such boys and to make colleagues aware of these boys and any supportive action that might be required.

• To support boys with physical disabilities and boys with SEN where appropriate.

• To work closely with the SEN Manager and the SEN team.

• To work with Heads of Year, the Pastoral Support Assistant and the School Counsellor in supporting boys' emotional needs, and liaising with outside agencies as appropriate.

• To arrange vaccinations.

• To raise awareness of issues that can have a negative effect on student health (such as smoking and drug use).

• To offer support and advice on a range of issues such as puberty, obesity and sexual health.

• To contribute, where appropriate, to the delivery of relevant PSHCE / Health Education.

• To provide training for staff on healthcare issues and advising on school health procedures.

• To highlight the health concerns of boys on school trips.

• To issue accident reports and review them (including those issued by other members of staff) for the Health and Safety Committee.

• To organise and distribute temporary bus passes for boys as necessary.

• To undertake such other tasks as are appropriate to the post of School Nurse/Matron.

• To undertake other duties of an appropriate nature as may be reasonably required by the Headmaster.


• To register late boys.

• To log all phone messages concerning absent boys and follow up on any absent boy where the parent has not made contact on the first day of absence.

• To maintain an accurate system for students signing in/out of school.

• To monitor the attendance of individual vulnerable boys and groups of vulnerable students.

• To assist with the identification of boys who need support in improving their attendance record.

• To send out letters as required about boys whose level of attendance becomes a concern.

• To work with other staff, parents/carers and other agencies when a boy's attendance record is of concern.

• To support boys who are absent from school for a short or an extended period of time with a medical concern. This will involve liaising with staff, parents/carers, outside agencies. To lead and notify staff about reintegration processes for such students.


• To hold a private clinic for boarders three times a day (08:00-08:40, 13:30-14:00 and 15:45-16:15).

• To organise appointments with the doctor, nurse, orthodontist, etc and take boarders to those appointments.

• To maintain medical records for all boarders.

• To securely store all medication and keep records of administration.

• To monitor boarders who are allowed to self-medicate.

• To register boarders with the doctor's surgery as required.

• To monitor and support the physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing of boarders.

• To look after boarders who are unwell during the school day.

• To stay overnight, if necessary, to deal with unwell boarders.

• To order stock and maintain the boarding house medical cabinets.

• To undertake such other tasks as are appropriate to the post of Boarding House Nurse/Matron.

• To update boarding staff regularly on first aid via Inset Days (e.g. epi pen use, asthma attacks, etc).

• Collect defibrillator from School Office at 15:40 and take to the Boarding House.

• Collect defibrillator from Boarding House at 08:40 and take to the School Office.

• To undertake other duties of an appropriate nature as may be reasonably required by the Headmaster.
