Senior Charge Nurse - RMN - MH Hospital

£40,000 /Year

Job Description

Our Senior Charge Nurse role involves:
  • Accepting 24 hour responsibility for the hospital on a rotational basis
  • Deputising for the line manager as directed
  • Managing finances within an allocated budget and providing written budget performance reports upon request
  • Ensuring the objectives of the Senior Management Team and the nursing department are reflected in the objectives for each service via annual reports and business plans, service operational report
  • Providing managerial leadership
  • Producing philosophies of care and local procedures in association with other members of the clinical team
  • Monitoring the performance and conduct of staff and taking corrective action when necessary including, where appropriate, involvement in the disciplinary process
  • Demonstrating the awareness of different styles of management and the ability to be flexible
  • Attending senior nurse meetings and away days as directed
  • Promoting clinical governance, ensuring that the hospital strategy is cascaded at ward level
  • Adapting ward information systems to facilitate accurate data collation for the purpose of risk and clinical audit
  • Managing the ward within the parameters of the hospital’s business plan and clinical strategy
  • Attending clinical team meetings and CPA reviews, and actively participating in multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment planning
  • Exercising economy in the use of medication, dressings and equipment, providing a safe and cost effective service
  • Monitoring stock levels of medications and consumables
  • Auditing nursing rosters in order to ensure adequate resources and grade skill mix provision over 24 hours
  • Acting as a resource for all staff as necessary and ensuring full understanding of health & safety and security requirements
  • Assisting in setting and maintaining service standards in accordance with the National Care Standards
  • Providing clinical leadership by sound decision-making based on clear and fair judgement
  • Promoting a culture which emphasises and encourages reflective practice and nursing risk assessment
  • Co-ordinatoring regular ward meetings in order to cascade objectives and information
  • Ensuring that health & safety and security policies are maintained and complied with via audit system
  • Keeping up to date with clinical and professional developments in nursing and attending relevant study sessions in accordance with the NMC validation process
  • Ensuring the rights and dignity of patients are protected and that the complaints procedure is accessed at the patient’s request
  • Promoting positive professional relationships with other disciplines
  • Facilitating staff attending statutory training in accordance with company and regulatory body requirements
  • Attending statutory training every calendar year
  • Meeting regularly with housekeeping staff and facilitating remedial actions to shortfalls in the ward environment
  • Ensuring that monthly environmental audits are accompanied by action plans and are standard agenda items at ward meetings
  • Ensuring that task allocation at ward level is sufficient and robust and as such ensures adherence to minimum standards

Job Requirements

Qualifications/Experience   To be successful as Senior Charge Nurse, you’ll need: Qualifications
  • First level registered nurse in the field of mental health or learning disability (RMN, RNMH or RNLD).
  • SVQ level 4 Management or equivalent (desirable)
  • Post registration clinical or management qualification (desirable)
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the assessment and treatment of people with mental illness, personality disorder or a learning disability who present with challenging behaviour
  • Awareness of the CPA process
  • An understanding of nursing risk assessments
  • Awareness of the NMC Code of Practice
  • Ability to reflect on practice and cascade this approach via role modelling
  • Ability to maintain professional distance with patients and junior staff
  • Ability to delegate tasks and to ensure objectives are achieved
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good management of people skills
  • A minimum of 5 years post registration experience
  • A minimum of 2 years previous experience in a similar assessment and treatment environment at Charge Nurse or equivalent
  • A record of completing regular clinical supervision for individual staff members
