Job Description

Gastroenterology Surgery and Nutritional Support

Base: Leicester General Hospital site with cross site working to meet patient need nb Trust service reconfiguration will impact on this posts location of work in due course.

Contract: Fixed term or Secondment for 20 month period

The current dietitian is the sole post holder providing a nutrition and dietetic service to all adult surgical inpatients at the LGH site. The emphasis of the post is three fold :

i. to ensure nutritional support to inpatients admitted onto the surgical wards with acute pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis and inflammatory bowel disease who will either remain as an inpatient listed for surgery or be discharged with a date for surgery

ii. to ensure surgical nutritional support to gastroenterology inpatients such as those with inflammatory bowel disease eg Crohns bowel resection cases, pancreatic and gallbladder disease throughout all surgical stages from pre surgery, pre assessment, peri operative surgery to immediate post surgery (including enhanced recovery programme) and then immediate post op follow up until non acute.

iii. to ensure surgical nutritional support to urology , rectal and colorectal cancer inpatients who will have bowel resection and often stoma created.

The nutrition and dietetic service provided to these surgical inpatients is essential as nutritional support throughout the care journey directly impacts on surgical outcome and survival rates.

An exciting opportunity for a Senior Dietitian to work in the friendly Nutrition and Dietetic Service Adult team based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) working across the Trust University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL Trust). This post will provide a pro-active and co-ordinated nutrition and dietetic service to patients within the gastroenterology surgery speciality in UHL Trust. Caseload will include adult in-patients on Gastro-surgery wards and in outpatient clinics. You will deliver a service mainly at the Leicester General Hospital and provide cross cover to a colleague working in the same speciality at Leicester Royal Infirmary. You will be expected to develop the role of the Dietitian within the multi-professional team.

We are looking for a motivated, active team player, with good communication skills and vision to continue to promote the nutrition and dietetic service within the Gastroenterology Surgery Speciality in the Trust. You will be part of a team of Dietitians based at the LGH site, but part of a larger adult team across the Trust on three sites whilst developing clinical leadership skills and gaining broad experience in all aspects of nutritional support in an acute specialist and tertiary hospital setting.

The UHL Nutrition and Dietetic Service has a strong commitment to professional and personal development and you will have an opportunity to shadow and cover other specialist dietitians based at LGH and LRI sites. There are also well defined CPD and clinical supervision models in place within the service. In addition to this is the UHL Nutrition and Dietetic Service is involved in all aspects of undergraduate dietetic training as we provide A,B,C block placements and you will play and active part in this.

The UHL Nutrition and Dietetic Service has a commitment to training other health professionals, carers and patient groups which will provide the opportunity to develop your presentation skills.

We are a progressive Service which actively contributes to UHL clinical governance and risk management agenda and has established clinical audit programme which you will be encouraged to contribute to.
