Job Description

Applications are invited from general surgeons who have completed or are in their final year of higher surgical training for the post of Fellow in Breast Surgery in the Manchester Breast Unit at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.

The Manchester Breast Unit provides breast screening for the Greater Manchester region and treats over 700 new symptomatic and screening breast cancers annually. It comprises of a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, radiologist, pathologists, medical and clinical oncologists and gives a wide exposure for the management of all breast diseases.

The clinical commitments of this position will give wide exposure to operative oncoplastic / reconstructive breast surgery and the management of all aspects of breast disease. The successful candidate will be fully involved in operative care, outpatient services and the multi-disciplinary meetings. There is also the option of gaining exposure to the management of both sarcomas and endocrine surgery. The job plan is flexible to suit the needs of the successful candidate and service requirements. There are excellent opportunities for both clinically based research projects or, if appropriate, laboratory based research.

The fellow will be expected to function at a peri-CCST level and therefore is most suited to surgeons who have completed or towards the end of their higher surgical training but are prior to appointment to a consultant position. Training will be provided for those specialist conditions and consideration will be given to specialist registrars in their last year of higher surgical training who wish to spend an additional year out of training in this additional position.
