Our vacancy We currently have a vacancy for a 28 hour per week (term time only) Specialist School Nurse to provide a high quality, child/young person focused school nursing service in Trowbridge/Bradford on Avon team. The School Health Nursing Team is based in Trowbridge Community Hospital and provides invaluable school nursing services to the local school age population. The team is led by a Public Health Team Leader with the support of a dedicated team of Specialist School Nurses, School Staff Nurses and School Health Assistants. To provide school age children/young people and their families with a service that promotes the physical, mental and emotional health of school age children/young people and provides support for families/carers by partnership working in a community setting. The main responsibilities and duties are: Patient Client Care
  • To have an awareness of the children and young people’s public health agenda and work in partnership with other agencies to improve the health of school aged children.
  • To be responsible for the assessment of children’s health needs so as to identify any deviation from normal development in line with child protection and the common assessment frame work.
  • To promote healthy lifestyles through opportunistic discussions and health education sessions.
  • To promote child and adolescent mental health through drop-in sessions, clinics, emotional literacy sessions and family support.
  • To promote healthy lifestyles through opportunistic discussions and health education sessions.
  • To take an active part in multi-agency discussions as an advocate for children/young people, families/carers and the school health service.
  • To support vulnerable children and adolescents through proactive discussions with families, schools, other agencies, attendance at Child Protection Conferences and one to one discussions.
  • To contribute to multi-agency common assessment of children and young people and take on lead professional role where appropriate.
  • To manage and identified caseload comprising of secondary and primary schools
Financial Responsibilities
  • To support the managers to make efficient and effective use of resources. All staff are responsible for identifying any actual or potential deviation from budgets and are to work with the budget holder or manager to find effective ways of handling it.
  • To ensure that resources are used in a manner consistent with organisational objectives and policies, ensuring that resources are realistic, justified and of clear benefit to the organisation.
Responsibilities for People or Training
  • To contribute to the planning, co-ordination and implementation of school immunisation sessions in line with national immunisation programmes and local patient group directions, policies and protocols.
  • To develop as a specialist within own working practice and act as a resource, lead and mentor to other school nurses and students. This may be through project development and may require further training.
  • To support junior members of staff and students, promoting and monitoring best practice.
  • To work as part of a team providing management and leadership to School Nurse Assistants and Band 5 School staff nurses
Other Factors
  • To maintain professional competencies and work in accordance to the Nursing & Midwifery Councils (NMC), Code of Professional Conduct
  • To maintain awareness of organisational developments including the Clinical Governance framework and the Trust’s targets.
  • To participate in supervision and appraisal and take responsibility for own professional development.
  • Undertake statutory and mandatory and other training as required.
  • Organise and manage own time according to delegated caseload and negotiate priority of work within locality team.
  • To participate in audit as required.
  • Ability to drive and travel regularly
  • Ability to concentrate on complex/ demanding tasks.
You The essential qualities we are looking for in our applicants are:
  • School Nurse Specialist Practitioner – Public Health current registration
  • NMC registration.
  • Valid UK Driving Licence.
  • Able to work flexibly and respond to changing demands in workload.
  • Able to maintain factual, consistent, accurate, contemporaneous, comprehensive records.
  • Clear understanding of the needs of children and young people.
  • Experience of interagency and collaborative working.
