Speciality Doctor in Gastroenterology

Applications are invited for this position of Specialty Doctor in Gastroenterology based in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. This post is for a year initially.

The successful applicant will join a department which includes:

• Two Consultants

• Two Specialty Doctors (including this post)

• One Clinical Nurse Specialist

Gastroenterology has approximately 12 patients predominantly in a General Medical ward (Ward 10); 2-4 patients as outliers as well as patients in medical HDU; ITU. The service provides excellent exposure to a wide variety of general gastroenterology, Hepatology and nutritional problems. The caseload includes acute flare up of Crohn's/ Colitis, acute GI bleeds, chronic diarrhoea or constipation, dysphagia /oesophageal cancer, acute alcoholic hepatitis and alcohol withdrawal obstructive jaundice/ pancreatic or biliary malignancy, decompensated liver disease with associated complications such as tense ascites/hepatic encephalopathy/hepatorenal syndrome, poor nutritional states either related to above chronic gastrointestinal conditions or caused by anorexia/bulimia nervosa and feeding related re-feeding syndrome.

The post will also include cover for the medical on call rota and weekend cover (1 in 6 with compensatory time off).

Re-design of services at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is currently underway, and NHS Dumfries and Galloway have been given the approval to start planning for a 'new build' hospital, with 344 beds, which will be completed by winter 2017. This new build will ensure NHS D&G staff are able to continue to provide high quality clinical care to the population of Dumfries and Galloway in a modern environment.
