Job Description

Transform your outlook, transform local healthcare, transform your career…

Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is on a journey. Out of special measures and with some bold and exciting plans for the future, we are an ambitious trust that is going places, and we want you to join us.

With three hospitals, including our flagship Queen’s Hospital, across the central regions of East and South Staffordshire and Southern Derbyshire, we are at the forefront of discussions about transforming local healthcare.

Will you come with us on our journey to Be The Best? Here’s more about the role and what we’re looking for.

We are currently developing a new clinical offer, which reflects the changing needs of our patients and will deliver the care that really makes a difference to our local communities. And we want you to help us shape and deliver it.

We are expanding our team to manage our 24/7 Emergency Department and provide leadership for our Minor Injuries Units and Urgent Care Model across our Trust and are looking for 5 full-time Specialty Doctors to join us.

We are working closely with Virgin Healthcare to shape the future model of Emergency Care across Staffordshire and this is an exciting time to join to be one of the first in the country to operate in this way. Our Urgent and Emergency care service was rated as “Good” in the latest CQC inspection, and this role offers you the opportunity to join us on our road to “Outstanding”.

Joining the trust will offer plenty of opportunities to further your career and to be hands-on in these exciting development projects. We offer a proactive approach to further training, development and education, including a well-equipped Centre for simulation-based training and a very supportive educational faculty - our educational supervisors have rated highly in GMC surveys. We also have strong links with University Hospitals North Midlands and Derby Teaching Hospitals.

We are currently developing our CESR programme working collaboratively with Derby Teaching Hospitals. This programme is intended to provide support and training required to successfully complete the CESR process and may include secondment modules or specific training such as learning a new technique or procedure. For the right candidate, we can offer a specifically-designed training and teaching package with a designated Consultant supervisor for the duration of the programme to support individuals career aspirations and goals.

In short, our Specialty Doctor posts offer scheduling flexibility, a nationally recognised commitment to training and education, as well as great benefits including a highly rated pension scheme, an on-site nursery rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted, and a salary sacrifice scheme for childcare and car leasing.

We offer the best of the Staffordshire and Derbyshire regions when it comes to relocation opportunities and life/work balance. Our main hospital, Queen’s in Burton upon Trent, borders the National Forest and is within easy reach of the Peak District, offering outstanding natural beauty and the opportunity to take part in healthful pursuits such as hiking, biking and camping. We are within easy travelling distance of major cities like Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham for those who prefer metro living, but there are also lots of attractive village communities and excellent schools for those looking to settle with a family.

We’re happy to talk to you and provide advice on housing, schooling and social life in our region. In short we love it here and would love you to join us. A relocation package may be available for the successful candidate subject to application and meeting our criteria. We are happy to share our tips to help get you settled.

Please note:

  • Applicants must have full GMC registration and hold a licence to practice.
  • The post is 10 PA plus 2 APA’s which includes a commitment to a full shift rota and is subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of the Specialty Doctor contract (2008). Under our local agreement, premium time is payable at an enhancement of one third. Please see the attached example to demonstrate the effect on individual pay
  • Further conditions have been implemented by the Trust that have been negotiated with the Medical and Dental Local Negotiating Committee. The national salary scale for Specialty Doctor appointments will apply (MC46).

We encourage you to come and visit the department and meet our staff. Please contact us for an informal chat or visit, by contacting:
