Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine

We require an enthusiastic, motivated and innovative individual to help us further develop Emergency Medicine in the stunning county of Cornwall. You will become part of a friendly senior team of 8 Consultants and 10 Specialty Doctors providing a dynamic shop-floor presence, training of medical students and shaping the model of Emergency Care in the region.

We offer adouble time, enhanced rate of 2 hours per PA between 10pm and 8am to recognise out of hours work and enable an excellent work life balance in a stunning location in the UK.

The main purpose built Emergency Department, renovated and extended in 2013, is situated in the 1000 bedded Royal Cornwall Teaching Hospital in Truro. The department is a designated trauma unit supported by a comprehensive range of core critical specialties. There is a helipad for the Cornwall Air Ambulance directly outside the main entrance of the Emergency Department and a larger helipad at the rear of the hospital for Royal Navy and other helicopters. Our Consultant Team provide 24/7 Trauma Team Leadership. The service sees 70,000 + attendances per year with a peak activity during the summer months as a result of the significant influx of tourists, with a regional reputation for a fascinating case load.

Doctors interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine will find these posts offer invaluable experience in a beautiful part of the country. There is a regular teaching programme for specialty doctors aimed at the MRCEM and beyond. Early participation on ALS, APLS and ATLS is enabled by our locally run courses. There are research opportunities in the department and we have successfully recruited to several national trials. We have students from the University of Exeter Medical School each week and there are ample opportunities to teach.

The aim is to provide a post to suit applicants with the necessary enthusiasm and attributes to participate in the provision of Emergency Medicine. Doctors wishing to work part-time, flexibly or a limited number of fixed sessions are encouraged to express an interest and visit for an informal discussion.

Contracts will be based on a 10 session Specialty Doctor contract, of which one session will be for supporting professional activities. The posts are compliant with the EWTD and include annual and study leave.

Cornwall is a beautiful county, which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling. There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall. The major route both in and out of the county is the A30, which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter. There is an excellent rail service with daily passenger and sleeper services and an airport at Newquay with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.
