Our vacancy The Speech and Language service within Virgin Care offers support to children who experience speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties through working on communication, understanding, talking, speech sounds and stammering.

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated full time Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to work on Sapphire Neuro Rehabilitation Unit (21 beds). Sapphire Unit is a 21 bedded unit based in Gravesham Community Hospital in Gravesend, Kent.

We work with patients who have progressive and non-progressive neurological impairments for a defined period of in-patient rehabilitation. Intervention is goal orientated and we have a strong ethos of multidisciplinary working. The team consists of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Psychology (Stroke patients only), Therapy Assistants, Rehabilitation Assistants and Health Care Assistants. We are looking for a forward thinking, passionate and highly motivated Band 6 Speech & language Therapy to join us.

You should have a minimum of 18 months post qualification experience, including multidisciplinary working; specialist knowledge of a range of physical conditions relating to Neurological conditions, including rehabilitation.

Applicants must be pro-active and adaptable and have a knowledge and experience of working within the NHS system.
Good communication and flexibility are essential.

The Speech and Language Therapist will deliver a high quality service within clinics, family homes, preschools, mainstream and special school settings. The role will also involve: Working with clients with significant speech, language, communication and learning difficulties both individually and in group settings

  • Motivating, supporting and developing specialists, assistants and students
  • Attending line management meetings in order to support and develop all staff
  • Caseload / workload management and prioritisation
  • Critical thinking - including analytical, interpretation and reflection skills
  • Demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills

You The essential qualities we are looking for in our Speech and Language Therapist applicants are:

  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice
  • BSC Hons or recognised degree equivalent qualification in Speech & Language Therapy (it is a well-supported post for a newly qualified Therapist)
  • Highly developed negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Highly developed auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe phonetically
  • Excellent time management, prioritisation and organisational skills
  • Motivation to develop and extend professional knowledge / expertise
