HMP High Down

HMP High Down is one of six new ‘reform prions’, which accommodates 1200 male offenders over the age of 18 years. Our award winning healthcare service operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day delivering Primary and Emergency care NHS services.

Prison nursing gives you a unique opportunity to work with a diverse population who have a higher concentration of health issues and co-morbidities to the general population. You will be joining an established team who work alongside other healthcare professionals including: GP’s, substance misuse practitioners, mental health workers, pharmacy staff and prison colleagues to provide a multi-agency approach.

Job Role

You will be part of a team who are motivated in using their clinical expertise to deliver high quality care to a specialised client group. The successful candidate will work on a request based shift pattern working mains (730-5:30), long days (7:30-9:00) and nights (8:30-07:30). They will work on the house-blocks administering medication, triaging patients and assisting with or running their own clinics. Nurses within the prison are also responsible for emergency response and will develop skills for such occurrences.

Prison nurses are largely autonomous although they are supported by their line managers (band 6’s) and the Primary Care Clinical Lead. Independent workers keen to specialise in different areas of primary care will be ideal candidates for this post.

As part of your role, you will be expected to expand your clinical skills in the following areas:

  • Triaging
  • Emergency Care
  • Phlebotomy
  • Sexual Health
  • Vaccinations
  • Acute and Chronic Wound Care
  • Health Promotion
  • Chronic Disease Management


As a valued member of the team, we’ll offer you a competitive salary of £21,909 to £28,462 per annum plus 15% High Cost Area Supplement and a Recruitment & Retention allowance. In addition, you will receive NHS / Group pension, ongoing training and development and good quality working conditions. The Primary Care department aims to improve best practice and give the highest quality of care to its patients whilst also developing its staff through training whether “in house” or university based.

Who are we looking for?

The essential qualities we are looking for in our Staff Nurse applicants are:

  • 1st Level Registration as an RGN
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and also as part of the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstration of ongoing professional development and a commitment to providing high quality, safe and effective care that meets the needs of patients
  • Ability to relate to patients and colleagues in a sensitive manner
  • A flexible approach with the ability to work across a team rota, weekend and night shifts are included
  • Keen to develop new skills and undertake clinical training
