Ferndene is a fantastic award winning unit in Prudhoe, Northumberland approximately 6 miles outside of Newcastle and Gateshead. We provide an integrated mental health and learning disability service for children and young people with forty beds split between four wards (Redburn, Fraser, Riding and Stephenson) each providing support, care and treatment to a range of children and young people aged up to 18 years of age.

We currently have vacancies for Band 5 Staff Nurses to join Redburn Ward which is our dedicated mental health admissions unit for young people.

We are currently restructuring the provision on Redburn Ward to provide a dedicated PICU and open admissions facility.

We provide inpatient care from a multi-disciplinary perspective utilising a broad range of therapies and activity based intervention. We work with both male and female service users who have a high level of emotional and functional need.

We are looking for qualified nurses who have/can:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Work with children and young people with complex needs and challenging behaviours
  • Plan and coordinate the delivery of care meeting the varying needs of the young people
  • Carry out and support a range of planned therapeutic interventions including education, therapy and recreation as part of a structured day.
  • Demonstrate skills in promoting good relationships and effective communication with all members of the team, young people, relatives and multi-agencies.
  • Undertake monitoring, supervision and guidance of junior colleagues.
  • Recognise and balance the need for support & challenge, and facilitate critical reflection.
  • Think on your feet and work as part of a team, whist giving clear direction about what is required and how to achieve it.

You will be required to do shift work, rotating throughout a 24hour period.

Should you be successful at shortlist you will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre at St Nicholas Hospital, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. The assessments will consist of a basic literacy, numeracy and medicine management tests, a Values-Based Group Assessment and a formal interview.
