Cycling Machine Key To Giving Up

March 14th 2007

A cycling machine or a breath of fresh air may be enough to help smokers beat their cravings, British researchers claimed today.

Exercise is one of the best ways for smokers to manage their cravings when they are trying to give up, according to the Exeter University study.

Researchers concluded that short bouts of exercise, lasting for as little as five minutes, could make all the difference.

And brisk walking could help reduce symptoms such as stress, anxiety and poor concentration, they found.

The findings, released on National No Smoking Day, were published recently in the journal Addiction.

As many as four million people may be inspired to attempt to quit today - especially in view of Britain’s imminent ban on smoking in public places and workplaces on July 1.

Exeter research Dr Adrian Taylor is now using brain imaging to study the impact of exercise on mood.

Dr Taylor said: "People who struggle to give up smoking could make things much easier for themselves by taking just moderate exercise.

"Not only may it help prevent weight gain but it will also help control the cravings and withdrawal symptoms that often lead to relapse."
