Red Wine Boosts Brain

September 19th 2006

New laboratory evidence backs the theory that drinking red wine may prevent Alzheimer’s disease, researchers reported yesterday.

Researchers said a study of laboratory mice showed the benefits of taking moderate amounts of the drink over long periods.

Animals were studied over a seven month period and fed red wine with their drinking water for the study at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, USA.

The findings reinforce the evidence that a drink or two of wine daily can have major health benefits, researchers said.

The study used a particular form of red wine, Cabernet Sauvignon and scientists said they had identified some of the means by which it helped those at risk.

Findings will be published in The FASEB Journal in November and reported to a conference next month.

Researcher Professor Giulio Maria Pasinetti said: "These findings give researchers and millions of families a glimpse of light at the end of the long dark tunnel for future prevention of this disease.

"This new breakthrough is another step forward in Alzheimer’s research at Mount Sinai and across the globe for this growing health concern that has devastating effects."
