Student Nurse Blog Week 17

December 15th 2004

Saturday I had the day off and just chilled out really, not doing much at all. I was supposed to work an early on Sunday, but wasn’t feeling too good (I didn’t even go out drinking Saturday night!) and didn’t sleep very well, so I called in sick (I am only supernumerary, so it’s not like I was letting the team down).

Monday I worked a late shift. It was a fairly busy shift, I was able to discharge a patient all on my own after the doctors had said he was fit to go home, and the Sister told me I could do the discharge. I did another drugs round (supervised) and was able to admit a patient.

On the Tuesday I worked an early shift, again it was quite busy. I did a drug round (supervised), sorted out transport for a patient’s discharge, and followed the surgical team as they came to see one of our poorly medical patients whom the medics thought might need surgery. The surgical team reviewed the x-ray and the patient and then stated that she was far too ill for surgery, wouldn’t survive and the medics should consider palliative (how sad).

Today I was out on my community placement; it was at the Children’s Development Centre and was really good. It tied in with two of the other community placements I had experienced. I spent the morning with two nursery nurses as they held a classroom play session with three children who were under 3yrs old and experiencing behavioural and learning disabilities.

Tomorrow we have a clinical care day. It was supposed to be on critical care, however, rumours are that the subject has been changed due to the depressing nature prior to Christmas. I mean what?! I am sure that 30% of the course will be in contact with a patient death sometime this week (before our Christmas holiday).

Anyway, I am working an early shift on Friday and then am going back to Somerset for two weeks over Christmas to visit my friends. I will be working at the hospital where I used to work prior to my nurse training, so I will try to update my blog at least once over the holidays.

I am afraid that this will be the last blog of this week - but not yet the last blog of this year!!!!

I hope that you all have a very merry, incredibly work free and extremely drunk Christmas!!!!!!! And a Happy New Year!
Matt
