Well I am back on my placement after taking a week out for my mental health placement.
I had a busy day yesterday with lots of management opportunitites on the ward. I worked a 130-930pm shift and have the same shift today. Tomorrow I am with the rehab physio therapists for the day, which should be quite interesting. I have an early shift on Thursday and then on Friday a clinical care day on sexual health at the education centre.
Next week will be my last week on this placement. I am hoping to organise a day with the rehab OT befroe I finish.
Then we have a week off before going back to Uni and starting semester 6, hurrar! I can’t wait to get it all over with and leave the NHS! Matt

Well the day with the physiotherapists yesterday went really well. We got to see several of the patients I was quite familiar with. We took one of the patients up to the gym and I was able to watch the physios assess the patients walking. In one of the bays we had six patients who were fairly mobile, so the physio and myself got them to sit in the middle of the bay in a circle and we took a group session with them for gentle exercises. It was great, although the patients didn’t really seem that enthusiastic - for some reason patients don’t always when it comes to physio, don’t know why.
Today was quite a busy shift, i did an early 7am - 3pm, but was able to do a lot with patient management and interaction with relatives and the medical teams. It was a really good shift, and I am becoming a lot more confident that I will be able to cope as a staff nurse once I qualify (although I think I will end up working part time for bupa, as the NHS in Manchester still don’t seem to have any jobs advertised for newly qualified nurses either in the PCT or Acute Trust).
TOmorrow I have my occupational health appointment at the BUPA South Bank hospital at 830am. I am hoping to work there as a Bank HCA in outpatients, on the ward and in Endoscopy. The plan is that when I qualify and move to Salford in September this year I should be able to transfer to the BUPA Manchester hospital and work part time as a newly qualified nurse whilst doing my next course at uni.
I am attending a clinical care day tomorrow from 930am on sexual health, sounds interesting. I hope I don’t get there too late, as I am at the South Bank at 830am.
If I don’t blog to you all tomorrow, I will blog next week. I am hoping to attend a meeting/conference at the Birmingham Childrens hospital Wednesday evening next week on child protection and child abuse.
Have a great weekend all. Matt x

Well today has been a good day. I started with a 6am start to allow me to catch the 710am bus into the city centre. I was due to attend my occupational health appointment at the BUPA South Bank hospital at 830am and wanted to make sure I was nice and early - especially with the communter traffic. I made really good time. The bus from the bus station that I needed wasn’t until 805am. I arrived at the bus station at 730am, so I went to MacDonalds for a coffee and read a newspaper.
I got to the South Bank hospital early, around 810am. Luckily the occupational heath nurse was already there so I was able to see her. She checked through my immunisation details and questionnaire and was happy for me to work in clinical areas. I finished the occupational health appointment at 840am but had to wait until 9am to see someone from personnel to get a photo taken for my file. So I waited in the restuarant and had a coffee. Luckily the woman arrived early and I was able to see her at 850am, didn’t need to take a photo, as I have four passport sized recent photos at home so was just given a form to complete and send back with a photo.
Cool, so then I did the ten minute walk to the bus station and caught a waiting bus up to the hospital. I got there for 935am, five minutes late for the start of the Clinical Care Day, but not as late as I originally thought I would be! The Clinical Care Day was on Sexual Health and there were only seven of us there! How disappointing. It was a great session and we were finished by 2pm. We started with a brief overview of the sexual health services in the county and how they linked to the relevant government policies and plans on sexual health issues. Then we had an interactive session in two small groups looking at the types and efficiacy of contraception. Before breaking for lunch we then had a go with condom applicators and condoms - certainly interesting. After lunch we looked at STIs’ and had a couple of scenarios to work through. It was certainly a worthwhile session to attend.
Whilst checking through my emails I noticed one from the Worcestershire Carers Association (whom I did a presentation for on Reiki and Reiki in Palliative Care a while ago). They are running a ’Pamper Day’ for their carers at the Fairfield centre, Brickfields, Worcester on the 7th March (Wednesday) and asked if I would like to be involved. I checked the date and it is a directed study day, so I agreed. They have asked me if I can do small reiki treatments, as well as give short talks to carers about reiki. So I am getting involved with that as well.
Next week is my last week on placement. I am hoping to go to a conference Wednesday evening next week at the Birmingham Childrens Hospital on maternal metal health and something else (I thought it was on child protection, so perhaps thats the other bit!?)
Have a great weekend all.
