Well yesterday one of my housemates phoned me (she was away for the weekend) and told me that the details of our final (and management) placements are now out. I am in the Theatres department. It seems that the university are struggling to find placements even more now, as lots of students are on placements such as A+E, ITU and Theatres. Whilst I appreciate that you still have management in these areas, I don’t think they would be as suitable as management placements such as wards, etc.
Never mind, I don’t mind theatres and I’m sure I will get to do a fair amount of management there (if I can run communication offices, pubs and a multi-million pound amusement park, I’m sure I can cope in Theatres). When I worked in Endoscopy at a hospital in Somerset, the Endoscopy department was based in the Theatre Department, so I have some experience of theatres due to sometimes helping out there. I have also been to Theatres here three times to watch operations on patients I have been looking after.
I don’t mind theatres, but there is a lot of standing around and it can sometimes get a little boring - although its really good when the surgeon talks you through what he or she is doing. I don’t think they have an operating list at this hospital on Sundays, just a team to cover emergencies, so I should get most Sundays off - which is cool.
This week is my last week on placement. I am working a late today and have arranged to meet up with the rehab social worker to chat to her about her role on the ward, and the resources available to her when discharging patients. I have an early tomorrow and Wednesday. Wednesday evening I am going to Birmingham’s Childrens Hospital for a conference on Maternal Mental health and Child Protection. I have a late Thursday and an early Friday, then I am off for a week. Hurrar!
I’ll try to blog to you all again soon (probably Thursday). Matt

Well this week has been really good. The shifts have been busy, but I’ve been able to do much more management things. I was able to teach a first year student nurse how to give an enema (covering explaining the procedure to the patient, gaining consent, positioning, PR examination if necessary, how to carry out a PR examiniation, etc.) and why we gave them the way we did.
Yesterday evening I went to the Birmningham Children’s Hospital for a conference on Maternal Mental Health and Child Protection which was brilliant and very interesting. Although I am not able to afford to go on the conferences they charge for, I was glad to hear that they do four free evening conferences each year, so I am hoping to attend the next one at the hospital on the 4th July if I am free.
I have a late shift today and tomorrow an early shift 7am - 3pm, although I am hoping to finish a little early tomorrow as I have to hand a form in at university and then see a private client early evening.
We are off next week and then start semester 6 (oh my god! Almost finished my training!) the week after. Have a great weekend all, enjoy the snow whilst it lasts and I’ll catch in a couple of weeks. Matt
