Student Nurse Blog Year 3 - Week 26

Cool, how sorted?! Went to Salford for the day yesterday, got the 726am train (didn’t finish work at the pub until gone 11pm and didn’t get to bed til gone midnight, so was a little tired!). Got to Salford for 1040am and spent the morning at the university chatting to nursing staff at the two health centres about various things (such as smoking cessation service).

Went to the Salford shopping precinct for lunch and then to visit the estate agents I had registered with. They still didn’t have anything available on the council housing list, but told me to stay on the list - even if I did get a flat with the student accommodation agency - as I would still be eligible for a place.

At 2pm I went to the office of the salford student accommodation agency and one of the office staff took me to view six properties. They were all on the same street as each other, which was in a nice quiet residential area about a mile from the university and half a mile from the shopping precinct! Anyway, I chose a one bed studion flat for £75 pw. It was five weeks rent in advance for the deposit and four weeks rent in advance to move in. The property is available from the end of July (perfect for me, as I want to move in early August) and you get the month of August half price, cool. So I signed all the paperwork and now just need to send a cheque for £525. It is furnished, but they said I could just tell them what furniture I want and don’t want and they will sort it out - as I have some of my own furniture I will be bringing up with me.

How cool? All I have to organise now is funding for the degree course, and co-ordinating a removal van to coincide with returning my keys to my current landlord and collecting my keys from the new landlord.

Anyway, got our ethics and law module this morning, doing a lecture on the human rights act, and have then got the afternoon off. Will blog to you all again soon. Only five months left! Matt

The human rights lecture yesterday morning was really interesting.

Today I had a meeting at lunchtime with the operations manager of the sexual health education unit. She was very good. I was able to ask her questions on the local service they provide with regards to sexual health promotion and the funding aspects involved with it. She gave me a history of the service overall and how it was first set up, along with a more indepth discussion around health commissioning and purchasing and the allocation for local and national identified needs.

We were then able to discuss how this would relate to my long term plans regarding the integrated medical centre and its role in providing health promotion and education services along with preventative medicine.

Certainly a worthwhile meeting. I am now going to spend the rest of my directed study day working on a directed study pack for our management module, before the next management lectures we have - which are all day tomorrow.

I was going to go to the Nursing Times exhabition at the G-Mex centre in Manchester (12 + 13th March), however, that has now changed. I got an email from the University of Salford to say they are having two special sessions where they will go through the funding application forms and other financial matters with prespective students and/or their parents prior to starting courses in September. The most convient session for me is on Wednesday 14th March, so I am instead going along to that, as sorting out my funding for the degree course is very important. However, I cannot afford to go to Manchester twice in the same week (it only costs £20 return with my young persons [Mature students] railcard), as I have other expenses to consider.
The pamper day for the Worcestershire Carers Association is taking place all day Wednesday next week and I have got most of the things organised for that. All I really need to do now is just turn up on the day with my things and spend the day giving free ten to fifteen minute taster Reiki treatments to those who want them, free one-to-one talks and consultations on Reiki and free health promotion consultations.

Blog to you all later. Matt
