Student Nurse Blog Year 3 - Week 29

March 20th 2007

Hi guys n gals, well I do believe that next week is our last week at uni, then we have three weeks off (obviously some of that time is directed study for our assignments!). Then its out on placement.

Yesterday I did some background reading for my management assignment, as well as some work on my PBL assignment from last semester - as I am hoping to get it published as an article in a couple of journals, due to the clinical findings within the assignment.

This morning we had a session on ’truth telling’ and ethical dilemmas, looking at ethics and the law around this area, what is truth and then small group work on a couple of scenarios. This afternoon we have got a lecture on ’Record Keeping’.

Tomorrow we are off for a directed study day and then back in on Thursday for the management module and Friday for the Capable/Competent Practitioner module.

I will blog again to you all later. Matt

Yesterday we didn’t start until 11am. The morning lecture was a session working in groups to practice our problem solving skills. We had to choose any problem we wanted to around something we had seen in clinical practice and then work out as a group what the cuase of the problem was, who it impacted, signs and symptoms, options, desired outcome and then an action plan with time scale. We had thirty minutes to do this and then had to present back to the whole group.

The afternoon wasn’t so good. We briefly revised the different styles of leadership and management. After that we went over the management assignment. What a nightmare! I couldn’t see what the problem was, but so many people couldn’t understand what was required for the assignment or how it should be structured - its not rocket science, after all we are third year university students now!

This morning we are doing our final manual handling update and are linking it into practice and how it links to the NMC code of conduct. This afternoon we have a lecture on associated physiology. Basically this will involve working in small groups again on a case scenario - i.e. a brief description of a patient either post op or with a medical condition and then we will have to work out what physiological factors we would need to consider as nurses caring for the patient.

Next week is our last official week at university! Then we are out on placement for 15 weeks, back at uni for a morning for registration, etc. and then thats it! Oh my god!
